Every dog breed has been subjected to various misconceptions and the Boston Terrier is no stranger to this as well! Bred to be as fighting dogs in their earlier years, they have now transcended from this depiction and is now one of the most popular dogs by all pet lovers especially in the US. Although the history of Boston terriers is often connected to pit fighting, there is also one side that explains that breeders before only wanted to mix the good qualities of Pitbulls and the now extinct English white terrier. Whether that may be true or not, the fact remains that Boston terriers are indeed lovable furballs you’ll enjoy your time with!
We’re going to share with you 5 common misconceptions of Boston Terriers!
They’re aggressive dogs.
Boston terriers might be small but their pitbull features make them look rough and gruff! This led to the belief that they are aggressive and can be excitable. This might be the farthest from the truth though as they are in fact one of the most socially adept dogs that are extremely friendly and well mannered! After all, they wouldn’t be called the American Gentleman if not for their disposition.
They are generally nonaggressive and are often friendly with strangers and other dogs as well. This is also the reason why they are one of the most popular breeds. Their looks might be deceiving for most people who aren’t acquainted with this breed but make no mistake, Boston terriers are precious furballs that just enjoy playing and sharing cuddles with their owners.
They are not good with children.
Most dog owners always worry whether their dogs might inflict pain and aggression towards their children. This is a valid point to keep in mind especially that dogs exhibit different types of aggression towards humans and their fellow canines as explained by veterinary experts.
Boston terriers though are far from this scope, especially that they are more inclined to give affection towards their companions, even children! In fact, they probably might know more how to entertain your toddler than you are. They are also extremely tolerant of children especially that kids can get rowdy and invade personal space. They’re small dogs so they don’t have a lot of health issues.
The common misconception is that small dogs don’t often get sick but the truth is Boston Terrier’s health has certain issues. Their adorable eyes for example (which is their cutest asset btw!) are susceptible to cataracts and cherry eyes. Not only that but they also have respiratory problems that are caused by their short muzzles. They have a number of health issues but most of them if not all are manageable.
They are extremely stubborn and hard to train.
Terrier breeds are often known to have a stubborn streak but what sets the Boston Terrier different from its family is that they are easy to train and are very obedient with their owners! Just give them ample positive reinforcement and they will surely be more than happy to learn new tricks with you.
They are not good guard dogs.
As we’ve stated before, Boston Terrier’s temperament is often flexible and they are quite extroverted. Their friendliness to other dogs and even strangers created this misconception that they aren’t good guard dogs! While they may not bark a lot whenever strangers are there, the great thing about them is they know when to bark at the right time! Their sixth sense really is something to be reckoned with.
Boston Terriers are one of the most gentle and sensitive dogs breeds out there. And while their temperament might be often mistaken because of their looks, they are quite lovable and sweet in their own way. They wouldn’t be one of the most popular dogs in the US if not for that after all!
