The American Kennel Club announced in 1893 that the Boston Terrier had become the first recognized as being bred in the USA.

3. Violent Origins

Though you wouldn't believe it today, Boston Terriers were initially bred with some seriously bad intentions in mind.

Dating back to the late 19th Century, Boston Terriers were bred for the sole purpose of becoming brutal fighting dogs. Over the decades, numerous breeds came into existence which mixed bulldogs and terriers.

The intention was to create the ultimate fighting hound. Unfortunately, dog fighting was a common and popular bloodsport amongst the working class of Boston during this period.

Originally known as Hooper's Judge, the Boston Terrier was originally a cross between an English terrier and an English bulldog. Luckily for us, Boston Terriers are no longer forced to fight for survival.

Despite their history, Boston Terriers can become incredibly obedient dogs if you know how to give them the right training.

Boston Terriers have impressively large heads. This is great for owners who like to give their dogs a good pat. Unfortunately, it's less good for their mothers.

Proportionately speaking, Boston Terriers have heads which are larger than their own bodies. This means that it is very difficult for them to be naturally birthed.

The result is that it is very common for Boston Terriers to be born via a cesarean (also known as a C-section). Any qualified vet will be able to conduct the procedure.

6. The Nation's Former Favorite

At one time, the Boston Terrier was the most popular pet in the entire USA. Statistics supplied by the American Kennel Club highlight that between 1905 and 1935, the Boston Terrier was either the most popular dog in the country, or ranked 2nd.

Although this number has fallen in the following years, there is little doubt that many people still hold the Boston Terrier close to their hearts. It now sits in the mid-20s in the list of most popular breeds in the US.

It still ranks as a popular pet in Boston, unsurprisingly.

This should prevent any cases of mistaken identity from taking place!

Any owner of a Boston Terrier can expect to get used to grunting, snoring, snorting, and even farting as a result. You have been warned...

You should remember though that the snoring does not have any sort of ill effect on their health in the long term. However, you should always keep an eye out for other conditions which may affect your dog.
